Commissioning and After-Sales: What JAMS Actually Does On Site

“Commissioning included” can mean anything from a brief power-on check to a multi-day performance test. That ambiguity creates problems for suppliers, contractors and plant teams alike. Jams (Pvt.) Ltd prefers to define field support in practical terms: what must be ready before our engineer arrives, what checks are within the visit, what evidence will be recorded and what remains the responsibility of the customer or installation contractor.

The stages below explain the kind of work a well-planned startup and after-sales path can contain without implying that every activity is included in every supply.

Before the visit: turn readiness into a checklist

The most productive commissioning work happens before travel is booked. JAMS and the plant should identify the equipment, location, responsible contacts, planned date, permit requirements and acceptance points. The customer should confirm that mechanical installation, electrical termination, utilities, process isolation and safe access are complete. Required manuals and drawings should be available in their final or approved form.

Photographs are a simple but useful readiness tool. A clear view of the installed equipment, suction and discharge piping, process connection, panel interior and nameplate can reveal missing items before a team mobilizes. Photographs do not replace inspection, but they reduce avoidable delays.

Installation review: check the conditions around the device

An instrument or pump can be correctly manufactured and still perform poorly in an unsuitable installation. Depending on the product, JAMS may review mounting, orientation, supports, valve direction, insertion depth, pipe dimensions, straight run, sample arrangement, suction lift, discharge pressure, cable separation, earthing or environmental exposure. This is a functional review against available documentation, not a substitute for the contractor’s quality control or statutory inspection.

Any deviation should be recorded and assigned. Some items prevent safe startup and must be corrected first. Others can be accepted temporarily with a documented limitation. Quietly working around an incomplete installation leaves the plant with an uncertain baseline and makes future diagnosis harder.

Power-up and configuration: establish a controlled starting point

Once safe readiness is confirmed, the equipment can be energized according to the approved procedure. The commissioning engineer checks identity and relevant settings rather than assuming factory defaults suit the application. Typical parameters include engineering units, pipe diameter, medium, reference conditions, range scaling, set point source, control mode, communication address, alarm limits and fail behaviour.

Configuration changes should be written down or exported where the equipment allows. A backup provides a reference after panel replacement, firmware work or accidental adjustment. Passwords and access levels should follow the plant’s control policy; they should not depend on one individual’s notebook.

Functional testing: prove the intended signals and responses

A device that works locally may still fail as part of the plant system. Functional tests therefore follow the signal chain. For an instrument, the displayed reading can be compared with the analogue or digital value at the PLC or logger, including range endpoints where simulation is safe and possible. For a metering pump, local run, external command, permissive, alarm and stop functions may be checked. The team records results against an agreed list rather than relying on a general statement that the equipment “was tested.”

Performance testing is different from functional testing. Proving a pump’s delivered flow requires a suitable measurement method and stable hydraulic conditions. Assessing a flow meter against a reference standard requires an agreed comparison. If formal site acceptance criteria are required, the method, tolerances, test medium and responsibilities should be defined before the visit.

Operator and maintenance handover

Training at commissioning should be concise and role-specific. Operators need to recognize normal status, interpret alarms, make permitted adjustments and respond safely. Maintenance teams need isolation steps, inspection intervals, wear parts, cleaning limits and correct spare identification. Automation staff need scaling, network settings and interlock logic. Trying to cover every manual page in one session usually hides the information people need on the next shift.

JAMS can explain the supplied equipment and demonstrate agreed tasks. The plant remains responsible for its operating procedure, chemical safety, lockout process and authorization of personnel. Attendance should be recorded, and the final procedure should refer to the installed model and site arrangement.

Closeout: leave an evidence pack

A useful commissioning closeout may contain equipment identification, date, attendees, inspected items, final settings, functional results, measured process conditions, open actions and photographs. It should distinguish between completed checks and observations that were outside scope. Both JAMS and the plant contact should understand what remains to be done and whether it affects operation.

This record becomes the first page of the asset’s service history. Without it, later teams cannot tell whether a setting changed, an alarm existed from day one or a process condition moved outside the original design basis.

What after-sales support looks like

After-sales work starts with good fault information. JAMS may help identify spares, review symptoms, provide remote guidance, arrange a field visit or coordinate technical escalation through the relevant principal. The path depends on the problem and warranty status. A request should include model and serial numbers, operating conditions, alarm messages, current settings, photographs and recent maintenance or process changes.

Not every issue requires travel. A wiring discrepancy, incorrect scaling or part-number question may be resolved from clear evidence. Conversely, a hazardous leak, repeated protection trip or unexplained mechanical failure may require the equipment to be isolated until an appropriate assessment is made. Remote advice should never be used to bypass site safety controls.

Boundaries make field support stronger

JAMS does not certify a customer’s complete process merely by commissioning one component. We do not approve civil work, pressure systems or electrical installations outside an agreed and competent scope. We also cannot demonstrate process performance when the required medium, load, utilities or reference measurements are unavailable. Stating these boundaries is not a refusal of support; it keeps acceptance evidence honest and responsibilities visible.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should a commissioning visit be arranged?

Arrange it as early as the project schedule allows, then confirm when installation readiness is credible. Engineer availability, travel and principal input may require lead time. A tentative date should not replace the readiness checklist, because an unready site can turn the visit into an expensive inspection only.

Who must provide tools, test equipment and permits?

This should be stated in the site scope. JAMS may bring product-specific tools or instruments agreed for the task, while the plant normally controls permits, isolation, access and site-standard safety equipment. Specialized lifting, pressure testing or electrical test requirements must be coordinated in advance.

Does JAMS provide an unconditional warranty for every site problem?

No. Warranty is governed by the applicable supply and manufacturer terms, and a reported symptom must be assessed. Installation damage, unsuitable operation or normal wear may not be warranty matters. JAMS provides a defined route for evidence collection and evaluation rather than promising an outcome before diagnosis.

What makes an after-sales request easier to resolve?

Provide the exact asset identity, a specific symptom, when it began, alarms, process conditions, photographs, settings and what changed immediately beforehand. State whether the equipment is safely isolated or still operating. This information helps separate application, installation, configuration and hardware possibilities.
